What is the Pain Gate and How Does it Work?

The brain can be likened to a computer; a control panel which interprets nerve signals received from the spinal cord and controls the transmission of pain via nerves in the spinal cord. The pain gate, in the back of the spinal cord, controls the transmission of nerve impulses to and from your brain and when it is open we experience pain. Many factors including stress, together with negative mood states, such as anxiety, depression and worry cause the gate to open.

When the “gate” is closed, nerve messages that carry pain signals are blocked and therefore we do not experience pain. There are many factors that can help to close the pain gate; Hypnotherapy uses deep relaxation which helps to calm the nervous system and close the pain gate.

In addition, when we think positively, engage in activities we enjoy and exercise, serotonin and noradrenaline are produced in the brain and this can help to dampen the transmission of pain signals. Exercise not only produces those chemicals but also endorphins and enkephalins which can also help to reduce pain.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy gets you concentrating on the positive things in your life, It can help to reduce your stress which in turn reduces your pain and lifts your mood. It is a non-invasive and safe way to improve and enjoy your life.
