The origin of a phobia is usually associated with the emotions caused by a traumatic event from early life or in a state of high stress. This produces a panic response in the subconscious (fight/flight/freeze response) which we then associate with a place, object or situation.

One of the roles of the subconscious mind is to programme us to try to avoid situations which put us in danger. These programmes are entirely automatic. Phobias are produced when the subconscious becomes instinctual with these responses to certain situations.
